Effects of different exercise Intensities on β-cells of pancreas and skeletal muscle GLUT-4 protein expression instreptozotocin-induced diabetic rats
ABSTRACT
Lim, E.m., Jun, J.K., Seo, T.B., Kim, J.O., Yoon, J.S., Yoon, J.H., Jeong, I.G. Effects of different exercise intensities on β-cells of pancreas and skeletal muscle GLUT-4 protein expression in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Exercise Science, 14(1): 43-52, 2005. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of treadmill running on damage inhibition of pancreatic β-cells and GLUT-4 protein expression of STZ-induced diabetic rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups, 15 rats each: the normal group (Normal), the diabetes operation (DO), diabetes low-intensity exercise group (DLE) and diabetes high-intensity exercise group (DHE). Rats of the exercise groups were made to run on a motorized treadmill by different intensity to each group for 30 minutes once a day during 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, the animals were sacrificed and density of glucose and insulin in blood and morphology were investigated in pancreas. Data were expressed as mean±standard deviation (SD). For comparisons among the groups, one-way ANOVA and Duncan post-hoc tests were performed with p < .05 as an indication of statistical significance. The conclusions of this study are following :1. After 4 weeks different intensity treadmill exercise, the number of pancreatic β-cells was investigated as follows; 1) in the Normal group : 169.3248 ± 25.3426, 2) in the DO group : 119.6267 ± 24.2935, 3) in the DLE group : 145.4800 ± 20.7785, 4) in the DHE group : 116.2533 ± 21.5324. As a result, the number of pancreatic β-cells of the DLE group was higher than that of the DO group and DHE group.2. After examining effects of different exercise intensities on GLUT-4 protein level in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats, Considerably decreased expression of GLUT-4 protein was observed and low intensity exercise for 4 weeks enhanced GLUT-4 protein level in diabetic groups up to that of normal rats
