The purposes of the current study were to investigate whether or not the efficacy of a 6-day aerobic exercise training as an anti-dyslipidemia treatment was dependent of the apolipoprotein (apo) C-III SstI gene polymorphism. A total of 100 Korean men (S1S1=40, S1S2=40, S2S2=20) participated in a 6-day moderate exercise program using either a motor-driven treadmill or a cycle ergometer. Height and weight for body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference were measured. Fasting total cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), glucose, and insulin were measured. HOMAIR as an index of insulin resistance was calculated by using a formula [HOMAIR = (fasting insulin(uU/㎖) × fasting glucose (mmol/L))/22.5]. With respect to the delta (changes in pre-to-post exercise training) scores, Two-way RM ANOVA followed by Bonferroni post-hoc tests showed that the subjects with the S2S2 genotype had significantly greater reductions in TG (p=0.005) and fasting insulin (p=0.042) than the subjects with the S1S2 genotype, adjusted for the pre-intervention difference. In conclusion, the current findings of the study suggest that the apoC-III SstI gene polymorphism might be useful for determining who is most susceptible to intervention by exercise in improving metabolic syndrome markers including fasting TG and insulin concentrations.
