The influence of long term golf participation on spinal asymmetries, power of lower extremities, and EMG activities of rotator muscle
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of participation period of golf on spinal asymmetries, isokinetic peak torque of lower extremities, vertical jump force, and EMG of trunk rotator muscle in the college students. The subjects consist of 18 competitive golfers with more than 5 year of golf and 15 non-competitive recreational golfers with less than l year of golf. The results showed that there was no significant difference exist in isokinetic peak torque between the advanced and novice players although advanced players showed better performance in peak torque. The novice players showed higher strength deficit of two legs although statistically not significant. The analysis of EMG results showed stronger EMG signal in advanced players in erecter spinae muscle, rectus abdominis muscle, obliquus externus abdominis muscle after series of golf fill swing practice although statistically not significant. In conclusion asymmetries in the strength and spinal bone were not affected by the length of previous golf participation experience, and this type of asymmetries influence the athletic performance and the possibilities of injury risk. Therefore it is believed that further research is needed to determine the length of golf participation influencing asymmetry of spinal bone and strength imbalance and develop the fitness program
Key words: golf, spinal asymmetry, vertical jump force, EMG
