ABSTRACT
Lee, S.K., Kong, M.A., Kang, H.S. Measurement of Exercise Intensity during Basic Movement, Kicking and Poomsae of Taekwondo. Exercise Science, 12(4): 727-734, 2003. The purpose of this study is to measure directly the exercise intensity, while performing the basic movements, Kicking and Poomsae of Teakwondo, with using %HRmax and %O2max.For this study, high school students(16.9 years) of Taekwondo learner with careers of over one year were selected as subjects. We attached Aero Sport KB1-C(NASA) and POLAR heart rate monitor(EDGE NV) to them and had them perform the Basic movement, Kicking and Poomsae of Taekwondo for 34 min. Then we directly measured their heart rate(HR) and oxygen untake(O2).The results obtained through this study were as follows.1. In performing the Basic movement, Kicking and Poomsae of Taekwondo, the mean heart rate were 148.3±9.31 beats/min, 182.3±8.20 beats/min and 173.9±7.87 respectively. The total mean HR during Taekwondo exercises were 168 beats/min and this corresponded to 84.0%HRmax.2. In performing the basic movement, Kicking and Poomsae of Taekwondo, the mean O2 were 1.67±0.17 l/min, 2.42±0.25 l/min, and 1.79±0.19 l/min respectively. The total mean O2 during Taekwondo rxercises were 1.96 l/min and this corresponded to 66.7%O2max. From the discussion above the results, it can be conclued that the intensity of Basic movement, Kicking and Poomsae of Taekwondo using %HRmax and %O2max is sufficient to increase cardiovascular fitness for health.
Key words: HR, O2max, Taekwondo
