ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of specific prenatal Yoga position (Comukhasana and Histupatasana) level (good, fair, poor) on the duration of labor.
METHODS:
In this study, 123 nulliparous, pregnant women (n=124, 31.1±3.2 years, 162.3±4.5 cm) underwent a prenatal Yoga two times per week (50 min/session) for more than 12 weeks. The participants were split into each 3 level group of ‘Comukhasana’ and ‘Histupatasana’ level (good, fair, and poor). The levels of Comukhasana and Histupatasana were tested before delivering babies (34-36 weeks of pregnancy). All babies were vaginally delivered.
RESULTS:
Duration of labor in accordance with the levels of Comukhasana showed a significant difference between high level (Good) group and low level (Poor) group (p=.005, 52.6% reduction). However, the duration of labor in accordance with the levels of Histupatasana as well as the combination of the levels of Comukhasana and Histupatasana was not significantly different at all. Additionally the levels of Comukhasana were correlated with height (r=.305, p=.001), hip circumstance (r=-.314, p=.014), BMI (r=-.538, p<.001), and postpregnancy weight (r=-.364, p<.001).
CONCLUSIONS:
It is concluded that (a) the high level (good) of Comukhasana might reduce labor time and (b) improving the level of Comukhasana through Yoga training and weight control during pregnancy might decrease the duration of labor.
