Predictive accuracy of bioelectrical impedance and anthropometry methods in estimating body composition in elderly
ABSTRACT
Kim, H.S., Lee, K.J. Predictive accuracy of bioelectrical impedance and anthropometry methods in estimating body composition in elderly. Exercise Science, 14(3): 241-250, 2005. Bioimpedance (BI) and anthropometry (ANT) methods for assessing body composition have been used. The purpose of this investigation was to compare estimates of human body composition determined from foot-pad style BI and ANT methods. The human body composition was assessed by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), BI method and ANT equation (svendsen, 1993). Twenty three men and 24 women, aged 60-82 years, served as subjects. The mean (SD) percentage of body fat (%BF) assessed by DXA, BI, and ANT methods were 28.4 (8.6)%, 28.1 (8.2)% and 25.7 (8.1)%, respectively. There were high validity coefficients (r=.91 and .95, for BI and ANT, respectively) with the %BF measured by DXA. However, compared to the criterion measures of %BF (DXA), the magnitude of agreement in the BI and ANT revealed a different pattern. The mean absolute difference between DXA and BI measurements was -0.5 (2.8) %BF and, between DXA and ANT it was 1.6 (2.5) %BF. Compared to the DXA method, the STF method was as much as a 9.5% underestimation of %BF. The results suggest that although the ANT provided high correlation with criterion value, use of the ANT may not suitable for assessing the %BF of the elderly in Korea.
