ABSTRACT
Jang J.S., Hong, C.B., Lee, J.E., Kim, H.S., Park, J.S., Kim, K.J. Effects of 12 weeks combined exercise program on body composition and atherosclerosis indices in middle-aged diabetic and obese women. Exercise Science, 15(1), 105-116, 2006. The purpose of this study was an analysis of the changes of body composition and atherosclerosis indices after combined exercise program of 12 weeks in diabetic patients (N=6) and obese (N=6, BMI >25kg/m2) middle-aged women. Combined exercise program of 12 weeks was a consisted of aerobic and resistance exercise as frequency of 5 days per week and exercise duration of 1 hour. We measured body composition (percentage of body fat, skinfold thickness, body circumferences, & abdominal fat area), atherosclerosis predictors (fibrinogen, hsCRP, lipid profiles, PAI-1, TNF-α, leptin, PWV, & intima thickness of carotid artery), diabetic indices (insulin, HbA1c, & OGTT) and physical fitness (grip and back muscular strength, sit-up, sit and reach, and Harvard step test). Body weight (BW) and BMI were significantly (p<.05) decreased in two groups after 12 weeks. Leptin concentration was significantly (p<.05) decreased, but blood lipid profiles, glucose, insulin, HbA1c and intima thickness of carotid artery in two groups showed no significant change after 12 weeks. Also, grip strength (per BW) was significantly (p<.05) increased after 12 weeks in diabetic group. In conclusion, 12 weeks combined exercise improves obese indices, body circumferences, skinfold thickness and grip strength (per BW) in two groups, but there was no effects in diabetic and atherosclerosis indices.
Key words: diabetes, obesity, atherosclerosis indices, exercise or combined exercise
