Effects of elastic band exercise on upper and lower electromyographic activity in stroke
ABSTRACT
Kim, N.J., Kim, H.S., Oh, J.K., Lee, B.H. Effects of elastic band exercise on upper and lower electromyographic activity in stroke. Exercise Science, 15(4): 329-335, 2006. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of progressive resistive exercise using elastic band on electromyographic (EMG) activity in stroke induced hemiplegic patients. Eight paretic patients were five men and three women(69.5±5.8 years), progressive resistive exercise using elastic band were performed three times per week for 8 weeks. EMG activity was measured on biceps brachii, vastus medialis and vastus lateralis. They demonstrated significant increased in EMG values at biceps brachii(31.7%, p<.05), vastus-medialis(14.2%, p<.01) and lateralis(49.6%, p<.01). These results suggest that light progressive resistive exercise using elastic band can improve the muscle strength in stroke induced hemiplegic patients. but, further studies are needed for the effect of long paralytic periods patients.
Key words: Stroke, Elastic band, Progressive resistive exercise, Electromyographic Activity
