ABSTRACT
Kang, H.J. The Effect of Physical Activity Level on β-cell Insulin Secretory Function and Sensitivity in Impaired Glucose Tolerance and Newly-diagnosed Type Ⅱ Diabetes Mellitus. Exercise Science, 11(1): 67-75, 2002. The aims of this study were to investigate the effect of physical activity level on β-cell insulin secretory function and sensitivity in impaired glucose tolerance and newly-diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus. In this study, patients with impaired glucose tolerance and newly-diagnosed type 2 diabetes were randomized to either a intentive physical activity group(IG) or a non intensive physical activity group(NIG) and the intensive physical activity program consisted of three times a week, aiming at 60~70 % of maxiaml heart rate, 60minutes a day. the intensive group was supervised and the non intensive group was non supervised for 12weeks. Multivariate analysis of variance, with repeated measures design, was used to test differences between groups. O2max was significant higher in the IG than in the NIG both after 12weeks[26.30±6.79 ㎖/㎏/min, 37.08±7.90 ㎖/㎏/min(IG), 24.72±9.54 ㎖/㎏/min, 23.68±5.98 ㎖/㎏/min(NIG)](p<0.05). AIRg and Si increased in the IG and in the NIG both after 12weeks[58.48±11.79 uU-1㎗-1min-1, 60.57±30.88 uU-1㎗-1min-1(IG), 135.18±36.15 uU-1㎗-1min-1, 199.37±12.87 uU-1㎗-1min-1(NIG)], [1.59±0.73 ×10-4min-1uU-1㎗-1, 3.33±1.14 ×10-4min-1uU-1㎗-1(IG), 2.27±0.19 -4min-1uU-1㎗-1, 2.68±0.84 -4min-1uU-1㎗-1(NIG)]. Also, β-cell secretory function adjusted for Insulin Sensitivity did not differ significantly in the two groups after 12weeks[92.98±15.34, 201.87±1.59(IG), 306.72±49.13, 533.60±94.26(NIG)]. These results suggest that regular physical activity(3days/week) may improve cardiorespiratory function and β-cell insulin secretory function, however Insulin resonse does not associated with O2max in patients with impaired glucose tolerance and newly-diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus both after 12weeks.
