Relationship between quality of life and functional fitness of elderly person
ABSTRACT
Kim, H.S. Relationship between quality of life and functional fitness of elderly person. Exercise Science, 16(1): 57-64, 2007. The ultimate objective of the successful aging paradigm is to improve the quality of life among the elderly. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between functional fitness (FF) and quality of life (QoL) in community- dwelling elderly. A total of 354 elderly men and women (72.4±4.9세) participated in a questionnaire study, and 318 of them were tested for FF. FF test and interviews were performed by trained people. FF was consisted of 7 test items representing the fitness areas: upper body strength, agility, balance, flexibility, and aerobic capacity. Questionnaires on QoL such as depressive status, self-rated health, economic status, life satisfaction, and happiness were given to the subjects by the interviewers. A significant inverse relationship (p<0.05) was found for life satisfaction and values for upper body strength (-0.14) and static balance (-0.27). A significant positive relationship (p<0.05) was found for subjective health status and upper body strength (0.19) and static balance (0.22), power (0.15), and endurance (0.15). In conclusion, these findings suggest possible relationships between functional fitness and well-being in community- dwelling elderly people. The improvement of functional fitness can have a beneficial effect on both QoL and depression.
