Estimation of the Extent of Energy Deficiency in Ballet Dancers using Serum Leptin, Soluble Leptin Receptor, and Free Leptin Index
ABSTRACT
Min, K.H. Estimation of the Extent of Energy Deficiency in Ballet Dancers using Serum Leptin, Soluble Leptin Receptor, and Free Leptin Index. Exercise Science. 15(3): 213-228, 2006. The purpose of the present study was to estimate the extent of energy deficiency in ballet dancers using serum leptin, soluble leptin receptor(sOb-R), and free leptin Index(FLI). For this purpose, the subjects of 30 females(age range, 20~29) were selected as follows: the pro-ballerinas(PB, n=10), the ballet-major female undergraduates (UB, n=10) and the female undergraduates(US, n=10; controls). The percent body fat(%BF) and BMR were obtained by bioimpedance analysis and the concentrations of serum leptin and sOb-R were measured by RIA and ELISA, respectively. The rank orders of leptin concentrations and the FLI values are US > UB > PB, whereas the sOb-R concentrations show the reverse order. This means the PB group is under the most energy-deficient state among three groups. The exercise time per a week of testees was negatively correlated with the values of leptin and FLI, whereas positively correlated with that of sOb-R, which shows ballet dancers could be placed in the dangerous state such as athlete triad due to the stimulation of energy depletion if the exercise would be performed persistently in the chronic malnutrition condition. In the diagram of %BF and FLI, the area{%BF≤ 25%, FLI≤ 10%} was reveled as the energy- deficient zone and people who belong to the anorectic zone{%BF≤ 20%, FLI≤ 6.5%} should be cared with the special attention. The above informations could be used to predict the candidates of athlete triad beforehand.
Key words: percent body fat, leptin, soluble leptin receptor, free leptin index
