Effects of oral nitrate supplementation on resting metabolic rate and excess post-exercise oxygen consumption in healthy man.
ABSTRACT
"The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of oral nitrate supplementation on resting metabolic rate(RMR) and excess post-exercise oxygen consumption(EPOC). Ten university male participated in this study. Resting metabolic rate and submaximal exercise test(70% VO2max) on a cycle ergometer for 30min were performed before and after oral nitrate supplementation. Also,EPOC was measured following submaximal exercise test(70% VO2max) before and after oral nitrate supplementation. There was a little decreased oxygen consumption during submaximal exercise after oral nitrate supplementation. However, there was no significant different between before and after experimental conditions. Interestingly, RMR was lower after oral nitrate supplementation compared with before nitrate supplementation. Otherwise, EPOC was higher following submaximal exercise for 30min after oral nitrate supplementation condition than compared with before nitrate supplementation. In conclusion, this study showed that oral nitrate supplementation resulted in decreased RMR and increased EPOC. By better understanding metabolic and energy expenditure effects of oral nitrate supplementation, various interventionS, such as, exercise intensity, mode, diet, should be considered."
Key words: oral nitrate supplementation, resting metabolic rate(RMR), excess post-exercise oxygen consumption(EPOC)
