The relation between physical activity and fitness in children
ABSTRACT
This study was designed to investigate the relationships between the time spent in specific intensities of activity, inactivity, and fitness in children. Subjects were 259 children(boy 124, girl 135). Fitness was estimated by the 1200m running test, 50m dash, standing long jump, sit-up, sit-and-reach. Physical activity was measured over 7 days by accelerometer(Actical). Time each day spent in physical activity(count), sedentary behavior, light, moderate, and vigorous activity were estimated. The results showed that there is difference between gender in physical activity. The boys had significantly higher levels of physical activity(counts/day), moderate-vigorous activity than the girls. Physical activity is associated with fitness in children. Especially there was significant correlation between vigorous activity and fitness.
Key words: physical activity, accelerometer, fitness, moderate to vigorous activity, children
