Effects of vitamin C & E supplementation on plasma free oxygen radical, total antioxidant capacity, and C-reactive protein after acute aerobic exercise
ABSTRACT
Kim, J.K., Shin, Y.O., Roh, S.K. Effects of vitamin C & E supplementation on plasma free oxygen radical, total antioxidant capacity, and C-reactive protein after acute aerobic exercise. Exercise Science, 16(3): 243-252, 2007. This study was to investigate the effects of vitamin C & E supplementation on plasma free oxygen radical, total antioxidant capacity, and C-reactive protein after acute aerobic exercise. Fourteen healthy male subjects participated in this study. They are divided into two groups; vitamin group(vitamin C 1000mg/day + vitamin E 400IU/day) and placebo group, and supplemented for 4 weeks. All subjects underwent running exercise on a treadmill at before and after treatment for 30 minutes at a work load corresponding to 80% of HRmax, Blood was sampled from a forearm vein at rest, immediately postexercise, and 30min, 24hr after exercise. These samples were analyzed for free oxygen radical, total antioxidant capacity, and plasma CRP content. There was a significant decrease in free oxygen radical, and significant increase in total antioxidant capacity and plasma CRP content, at immediately postexercise and 30min after exercise. Vitamin C & E supplementation significantly increased total antioxidant capacity and significantly decreased CRP content at resting level. Free oxygen radical, total antioxidant capacity, and plasma CRP content, all of which were recoverd at 24hr after exercise in both groups. These results suggested that vitamin C & E supplementation for 4 weeks significantly reduced oxidative stress and significantly improved antioxidant capacity, and resulted in reduced CRP related with oxidative stress.
Key words: vitamin C, E, free oxygen radical, total antioxidant capacity, CRP, exercise
