ABSTRACT |
The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes of balance and gait functions depending on alterations of muscle power. The changes in trunk muscle power as well as in balance and gait were examined by enforcing isokinetic exercise to trunk muscles of hemiplegia patients. The subjects were 11 hemiplegic patients, 49 years old on average with 79.62 month-disease period. Study results showed that in trunk muscle power of hemiplegia patients, the peak torque and maximum power of extensor muscles both showed a significant increase at all angular velocities of 60°/sec, 90°/sec, 120°/sec, 150°/sec. However, the changes in trunk flexor muscles were not significant. As for changes in balance, the weight distribution index(WDI) did not show any meaningful changes despite the increase of trunk extensor muscle power of hemiplegic patients. The stability index(STI) changed significantly as the patient's trunk extensor muscle power increased. As for changes in gait, tests related to gait abilities such as 10M walking, UP & GO, stair UP, stair DOWN tests all showed significant changes. These results indicate that trunk muscle strengthening exercises are necessary in order to improve the balance and gait abilities of hemiplegia patients. |
