Impact of Qi-gong for mental and physical training on the body composition and aging-related hormone of middle-aged women.
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of Qi-gong for mental and physical training on middle-aged women's body composition and aging-related hormone. The subjects in this study were 20 middle-aged women. An experimental group and a control group were randomly organized with 10 women respectively, and Qi-gong training was provided three times a week during a 12-week period of time. The findings of the study were as follows: First, there were significant differences in fat-free mass according to the main effects of testing time, and there were significant differences in body fat mass and body fat percentage according to both the main effects and interaction effects of group and testing time. No statistically significant differences were found in weight and BMI according to either the main effects or interaction effects of group and testing time. Second, there were significant differences in growth hormone and estrogen according to both the main effects and interaction effects of group and testing time. Given the above-mentioned findings, Qi-gong training is expected to be one of good mental and physical training programs to exert an effective influence on the increase of middle-aged women's fat-free mass, the decrease of their body fat mass and body fat percentage, and the increase of their growth hormone and estrogen.
Key words: Qi-gong, Middle-aged women, Body composition, Aging-related hormone
