The association of metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, adipocytokines and cardiorespiratory fitness in female adolescents
ABSTRACT
Lee, K.J., Lee, K.Y., Shin, Y.A. The association of metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, adipocytokines and cardiorespiratory fitness in female adolescents. Exercise Science, 16(3): 201-212, 2007. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, adipocytokines, and cardiorespiratory fitness in female adolescents. The subjects who participated in this study were 36 female adolescents. The obese adolescents had higher metabolic syndrome risk factors except SBP(p<.05), and lower HDL-C that indicates a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (p<.05). The obese adolescents also showed the up-regulation of insulin levels, insulin resistance, and visfatin concentration (p<.05), and lower levels of cardiorespiratory fitness (p<.001). Insulin and the factors of insulin resistance were associated with metabolic syndrome risk markers and cardiorespiratory fitness (p<.05, respectively). Adipoenctin indicated the positive association with HDL-C and cardiorespiratory fitness (p<.05, respectively). In conclusion, obesity in the female adolescents caused insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. Moreover, lower levels of cardiorespiratory fitness in obese adolescents may affect the metabolic syndrome and the level of adipocytokines. Therefore, the results of this study suggested that the strategy for improving in the cardiorespiratory fitness is needed to ameliorate the insulin resistance, the metaolbic syndrome risk factors, and the level of adipocytokines.
Key words: female adolescents, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, adipocytokines, cardiorespiratory fitness
