The effect of wheelchair basketball training on cardiorespiratory function and hormones response in spinal cord injured wheelchair basketball players
ABSTRACT
Chung, Y.S. The effect of wheelchair basketball training on cardiorespiratory function and hormones response in spinal cord injured wheelchair basketball players. Exercise Science, 15(1), 1-8, 2006. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of 8-week wheelchair basketball training on cardiorespiratory function and hormones response in spinal cord injured wheelchair basketball players (WBP). Eleven male paraplegic WBP were participated in this study. Pre and after 8-week wheelchair basketball training, All subjects completed 3-min stage graded maximal arm crank ergometer exercise (ACE), with exercise intensity increased 15 watts every 3-min. The results are as follows. First, Cardiorespiratory function analysis demonstrated that 8-week wheelchair basketball training has significantly increased in ventilation threshold (VT), but has no significant effect on other variables. Second, hormones response analysis demonstrated that 8-week wheelchair training, triiodothyronine (T3) has significantly increased in rest, maximum exercise, and recovery 30-min, and norepinephrine in recovery 30-min, but has no significant effect on other variables. In conclusion, 8-week wheelchair basketball training showed positive change in VT and hormones (T3, norepinephrine). Therefore, this study supports the conclusion that continuous wheelchair training participation is the one of most effective methods to maintain daily manual wheelchair propulsion avoiding the risks of energy metabolism restrict.
Key words: wheelchair basketball training, cardiorespiratory function, hormones reponse
