The effects of glycogen supercompensation by single bout of glycogen depletion exercise with normal diet in untrained rat skeletal muscle
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to examine if excessive glycogen accumulation can be achieved with single bout of submaximal exercise in untrained rat skeletal muscle without diet manipulation. Sixteen rats were randomly divided into 2 group(control & single bout endurance exercise group). Animals were performed 6 hour long swimming with normal chow diet. Glycogen concentrations were increased 2.3 fold(p<.001) in exercised muscles. The expression of GLUT-4 protein expressions were 2.5 fold(p<.001) higher than control group, but hexokinase II protein expressions were not changed by single bout of endurance exercise. The expression and activation of AMPK in swim exercised muscles were 2.9 fold(p<.001) and 3.1 fold(p<.05) higher in trained muscles. These observation leads us to conclude that single bout of glycogen depleting submaximal exercise with normal diet is more than enough to induce glycogen supercompensation. The glycogen supercompensation may be influenced by increased induction of GLUT-4 protein and activation of AMPK.
