The Effect of Combined Green Tea Consumption and Aerobic Training Program on Adipocytokines and Antioxidant System
ABSTRACT
Jun, T.W., Shin, Y.A., Kim, K.B., Seo, D.I., Kim, Y.K., So, S. The Effect of Combined Green Tea Consumption and Aerobic Training Program on Adipocytokines and Antioxidant System. Exercise Science. 15(2): 137-146, 2006.The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of combined green tea consumption and aerobic training program for 12 weeks on adipocytokines and antioxidant system in obese women. Thirty three obese females(body mass index(BMI) 25) were recruited. The average age was 51.93 (range 30-65) years. The subjects were randomly divided into green tea consumption group (GT, n=9), green tea consumption and exercise training group (GT+EX, n=8), exercise group (EX, n=9) and controls(n=7). GT and GT+EX groups were supplemented with four cups of green tea a day(containing approximately 450mg of total catechins) during the experimental periods. GT+EX and EX groups participated in a supervised training program for 12 weeks of aerobic exercise(60% HRR ~80% HRR, 30~60 minutes a day, 3/week). After exercise training, waist circumference(WC) was significantly decreased in GT group. On the other hand, body weight, BMI, and WC were significantly decreased in GT+EX and EX groups. TG and, LDL-C were significantly decreased in GT and GT+EX groups, and HDL-C was significantly increased in GT+EX group. TNF-α concentration was significantly increased in GT, GT+EX and control groups. Leptin was significantly decreased in EX group. MDA was significantly decreased and SOD was significantly increased in GT group. GPx was significantly increased in GT+EX and EX groups. In conclusion, green tea consumption was very effective method to improve the body composition, blood lipid profiles and antioxidant system. This study suggests that further studies are needed to clarify whether, and by which mechanisms of combined green tea consumption and aerobic training program could influence adipocytokines and antioxidant system.
