The relationship between regular exercise and both Framingham Risk Score and determinant of Metabolic Syndrome in middle-aged men
ABSTRACT
Joo, K.C., Lee, H.J. The relationship between regular exercise and both Framingham Risk Score and determinant of Metabolic Syndrome in middle-aged men. Exercise Science. 15(3): 181-192, 2006. This study was to investigate how regular exercise would contribute to the middle-aged men's health, in the context of cardiovascular and metabolic risk reduction. Sixty-nine resident in Cheongju, aged from 40 to 59 years, were recruited and tested. Thirty-five person fulfilled the criteria, that was exercising 3 times a week more than 3 months, were classified as regular exercise(RE) group. Comparing the mean value, RE group demonstrated to be superior than their counterpart group(NE) in body composition(BMI, %BF, WC, WHR), blood profile(TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, TG, FBS), functional capacity(O2peak, HRrest), and Framingham Risk Score(AR; 5.4% vs 9.6%, RR; 1.1 vs 1.8). χ2-test revealed with statistical significance(p<.05) that number of person(or %) who demonstrated higher values than borderline in both CAD risk factor and determinant of metabolic syndrome were much more in NE group. While number of person determined as metabolic syndrome were 16 of 34(47.1%) in NE group, there were only 1 of 35(2.9%) in RE group. The result of this study also showed inverse relationship between O2peak and both Framingham score(r=-.568, p<.001) and number of determinant for syndrome-X(r=-.505, p<.001). Metabolic Syndrome was positively associated with Framingham Risk Score(r=.568, p<.001). It suggests that regular exercise or physical activity is beneficial for cardiovascular and metabolic risk reduction.
Key words: Framingham Risk Score, Metabolic Syndrome, regular exercise, CAD, middle-aged men
