Effects of a strength exercise training for foot intrinsic muscle on height of medial longitudinal arch and balance in females aged 20's
ABSTRACT
This study was designed to examine the effects of strength exercise training for foot intrinsic muscle on height of medial longitudinal arch and balance. Fifteen females, aged 20-29 yrs, were randomly assigned to one of two groups, i.e., exercise training group (TR: n=7) and control group (CON: n=8). Subjects in TR performed an exercise program developed to increase strength of foot intrinsic muscle 20-30 min/session, five sessions/wk for six weeks, whereas subjects in CON were asked to maintain their normal life pattern during the same treatment period. Variables regarding height of medial longitudinal arch and balance were measured and compared between two groups as well as between two tests utilizing repeated two-way ANOVA. Main results of the present study were as follows: 1) Heights of medial longitudinal arch of right and left feet in neutral and standing increased significantly after the exercise training. 2) Regarding static balance, X-axis sway, Y-axis sway, and sum of sway were tended to decrease after the exercise training. 3) There was no significant training effect on dynamic balance. It was concluded that strength exercise training for foot intrinsic muscle would have positive effects on increment of height of medial longitudinal arch and enhancement of static balance. Research investigating the effects of exercise program developed to enhance even dynamic balance would be warranted in near future.
