The effects of combined exercise on basic physical fitness, neurotrophic factors and working memory of elementary students

ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impacts of Taekwondo-based combined exercise program for 12 weeks being aimed at growing children on basal physical fitness, neurotrophic factor, and working memory.
METHODS:
A total of 30, 5th grade male elementary students, who had no special past medical history and physical and/or emotional developmental disability and were healthy at the time, were selected for the study. The study groups were divided into a combined exercise group (CEG, n=15) and a control group (CG, n=15). The combined exercise program was consisted of Taekwondo movement as a basic program, and training frequency was 5 times weekly, of which training time was a total of 60 minutes each time.
RESULTS:
First, the complex training program for 12 weeks resulted in the improvements of basal physical fitness in the combined exercise group comparing with the control group, such as muscle endurance, cardiopulmonary endurance and agility. Second, in the case of BDNF, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, although there was an increasing trend in the combined exercise group comparing with the control group, no statistically significant difference between them. In the case of NGF, it was shown that there was a statistically significant increase in the combined exercise group comparing with the control group. Third, in the working memory, there was no statistically significant difference between the combined exercise group and the control group. As shown above, while the basal physical fitness was improved and the concentration of NGF increased through the combined exercise program for 12 weeks being aimed at growing children, this program didn't have an impact on the improvement of BDNF and working memory.
CONCLUSIONS:
In conclusion, it is considered that the applying training program including a learning task rather than the training program occurring simple movements repeatedly is practically helpful to enhance the brain function in growing children.
