Effects of aerobic walking exercise on insulin resistance in obese middle-aged women. Exercise Science
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of aerobic walking exercise on insulin resistance and energy metabolic regulatory networks in subcutaneous adipose tissues between non-obese(NO) and obese + insulin resistance(OI) groups. A total of 32 middle-aged women was classified as either NO group or OI group based on body mass index(BMI), waist circumference(WC), and oral glucose tolerance test, and they participated in a 24-week well-monitored exercise intervention program. Both of the NO and OI groups had significant(p<.05) improvements in obese indices (weight, BMI, BF, waist), CRF, insulin resistance indices(HbA1c, MPG, FBI, HOMA-IR, AUC glucose) following the 24-week exercise intervention program, with no significant group differences. With respect to mRNA expressions, both groups had significant(p<.05) improvements in AMPK pathway(AMPK) and mTOR pathway(mTOR), with no significant changes in insulin pathway(i.e., IRS, PDK, GLUT4), hexosamine pathway(GFAT), S6K, PPAR, JNK, and MAPKKK. In conclusion, the findings of the current study indicate that aerobic walking is an effective means of improving obesity and insulin resistance.
